Alila Jabal Akhdar, perched in a mountain 2,000 meters above sea level in Oman, is a haven
for adventure travelers and a memorable culinary experience for food lovers.
A beautiful food journey using fresh and seasonal local ingredients crafted to gastronomic perfection
A secluded gem, Alila Jabal Akhdar is a haven for adventure travelers, nature lovers and those seeking a retreat from the desert heat. The well-known Asian brand, Alila is synonymous with unique designs and a kind of pampering that only Asian brands know how to give, especially those originating from Bali. Jabal Akhdar, meaning “The Green Mountain” in Arabic, is part of the Al Hajar mountain range, one of Oman’s most spectacular regions. The boutique hotel was built in 2014 in this breathtaking location, perched 2,000 meters above sea level on the edge of a dramatic gorge with the Hajar mountains surrounding it. All of this makes Alila Jabal Akhbar the perfect base for exploring the region’s magnificent landscape of rugged, untouched beauty while experiencing the height of sumptuous comfort.
Designed to evoke a traditional Omani village, the Alila has 78 suites that are generously spaced out to provide guests with maximum privacy, a wide terrace and an infinity pool that gives you the impression you are swimming right off the mountain. The hotel’s rocky exterior blends in with its pristine surroundings and is mirrored with a stone and hardwood interior. Within the stone exteriors, the resort’s unique expression of minimalist style is infused with warmth and colors that reflect the region’s ethnic influence. Authentic elements of Omani design decorate the interiors, such as copper ornaments and handmade pottery from Bahla, for which the town is famed. Guests particularly fall in love with the tree patterns stenciled on the walls above each of the beds; the manager says it took a local artist three days to paint each one.
Alila Jabaj Akhbar is a memorable culinary experience for food lovers, including an international menu inspired by the golden age of Arabic cuisine, influenced by trade routes that stretched from the Middle East to the Mediterranean region. From traditional Omani food to Thai curry, prepare to be treated to a rich variety of flavors, using fresh and seasonal local produce crafted to gastronomic perfection. Chef Alex Ensor, who has made a name for himself in the culinary world and has won an extensive list of awards, along with his team strive to continually elevate the culinary experience that Alila is famous for. They consistently create new menus taking advantage of the fresh, local mountain produce.
Guests have two restaurant choices, Juniper Restaurant and Rose Lounge. Juniper Restaurant, named after the juniper trees that grow in the highlands of Oman, satisfies all your culinary cravings from breakfast through to dinner. Start your day with a pastry or bread and their famous rose jam (the Jabal is well known for its fragrant roses and pomegranate trees) from the abundant buffet, which also includes freshly cut fruits, cold cuts and salmon, Arabic mezze options and a large selection of cereals, nuts and seeds.
Everything is locally sourced where possible – knowing the provenance of your food makes it taste even better. The menu has something for everyone, from vegetarian dishes to an Omani tasting menu, with items such as smoked duck breast with house pickles, tamarind and spiced pine nuts; Mandagery Creek venison with parsnip truffle purée, pomegranate reduction and juniper berry jus; and chargrilled skewered minced lamb kebab served with mint yogurt and date-tamarind sauce. A local favorite is chicken that has been marinated overnight with yogurt, ginger, chili and paprika, and served with a creamy potato mash.
If you fancy something lighter, head to the Rose Lounge, Alila’s poolside bar and lounge. Quench your thirst from a long list of juices made using local produce, including pomegranate and lemon mint juice. Or grab a snack such as the Vietnamese rice paper rolls and Gado-Gado (a classic Indonesian salad). In the evening enjoy a cocktail on one of the comfortable sofas with a stunning view of the setting sun.
In between dining on the hotel’s exquisite cuisine, guests can enjoy not only the outdoor infinity pool, but a heated indoor pool framed by stone columns and mood-setting candles. For a bit of a thrill you may want to climb Alila’s newly opened Via Ferrata, which is the highest protected climbing path in the Middle East. Or book a cliff-side yoga session and get in your morning stretch while enjoying picturesque views of the sunrise. There is also Spa Alila, a peaceful sanctuary dedicated to pampering you from head to toe.
A remote and rugged escape, Alila Jabal Akhdar is perfect for the active gourmet traveler, and a destination you will definitely want to add to your culinary travel list.
